When people think about improving their health, they often focus on finding the perfect supplement, starting a new medication, or trying the latest diet trend. While those things can have a role, one of the most powerful tools for improving your health is much simpler:
The food you eat every day.
At Fit Rx Health & Wellness, nutrition is one of our Seven Pillars of Optimal Health because every system in your body depends on the nutrients you provide it. Your energy, metabolism, immune system, hormone production, brain function, and even your ability to recover from illness are all influenced by what you choose to eat.
Good nutrition isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistently giving your body the building blocks it needs to function at its best.
Food Is Information
Every meal sends signals throughout your body.
Whole, nutrient-dense foods tell your body to:
- Build muscle
- Repair tissues
- Reduce inflammation
- Stabilize blood sugar
- Produce hormones efficiently
- Support a healthy immune system
Highly processed foods often send the opposite message by promoting inflammation, unstable blood sugar, and excess calorie intake without providing many essential nutrients.
Your body is constantly responding to the information you give it through food.
Prioritize Protein
If there’s one nutritional recommendation I emphasize more than almost any other, it’s prioritizing protein.
Protein is essential throughout life, but it becomes even more important as we age.
Adequate protein helps:
- Preserve lean muscle mass
- Support metabolism
- Improve recovery after exercise
- Promote satiety
- Stabilize blood sugar
- Support healthy aging
Excellent protein sources include:
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Lean beef
- Fish
- Eggs
- Greek yogurt
- Cottage cheese
- Protein shakes when necessary
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to lose weight while eating too little protein. This is especially important for individuals taking GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide or tirzepatide.
While these medications can be very effective, they also increase the risk of losing muscle if protein intake and resistance training aren’t prioritized.
At Fit Rx Health & Wellness, we don’t simply focus on helping patients lose weight—we focus on helping them lose body fat while preserving muscle.
For many adults, aiming for approximately 0.7–1.0 grams of protein per pound of ideal body weight is an excellent goal, although individual needs vary.
Choose Whole Foods Whenever Possible
Modern grocery stores are filled with foods designed for convenience—not necessarily health.
A simple rule is this:
If it grew, walked, swam, flew, or came from the ground, it’s probably a good choice.
Whole foods naturally provide:
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Fiber
- Healthy fats
- Antioxidants
- Phytochemicals
Build your meals around foods like:
- Fresh vegetables
- Fruit
- Lean meats
- Fish
- Eggs
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Beans
- Sweet potatoes
- Rice
- Oats
These nutrients work together in ways that supplements simply cannot duplicate.
The less processing, the better.
Limit Highly Processed Foods
Ultra-processed foods tend to be:
- High in added sugars
- Refined carbohydrates
- Unhealthy fats
- Sodium
- Artificial ingredients
They’re also engineered to make you want more.
Many people find that when they replace processed foods with whole foods, they naturally eat fewer calories without feeling deprived.
Instead of obsessing over what to avoid, focus on adding more nutritious foods to your plate.
Small improvements made consistently often produce better long-term results than restrictive diets.
Nutrition and Hormones
Nutrition doesn’t just affect your weight.
It also influences:
- Testosterone
- Estrogen
- Insulin
- Cortisol
- Thyroid function
Poor nutrition contributes to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and excess body fat—all of which can negatively affect hormone balance.
Conversely, eating adequate protein, healthy fats, and nutrient-rich foods provides your body with the raw materials it needs to produce and regulate hormones effectively.
This is one reason nutrition is such an important pillar in our approach to hormone optimization.
Nutrition Is About More Than Weight Loss
Many people only think about nutrition when they’re trying to lose weight.
The truth is, nutrition impacts every stage of life.
Healthy eating supports:
- Brain function
- Heart health
- Bone strength
- Muscle preservation
- Immune function
- Longevity
- Energy
- Mood
It’s one of the few things you have complete control over every single day.
Progress, Not Perfection
One unhealthy meal won’t ruin your health.
Likewise, one healthy meal won’t transform it.
Optimal health comes from making consistently better choices over time.
At Fit Rx Health & Wellness, we encourage patients to focus on sustainable habits rather than chasing perfection.
When nutrition becomes part of your lifestyle—not just another diet—you’ll see improvements not only in your weight but also in your energy, strength, metabolic health, and overall quality of life.
